U.S. Olympic uniforms are made in China…with just about everything else.

As everyone knows, the 2012 Summer Olympic games in London are about to begin. But you may not know the swirling controversy regarding the uniforms that the U.S. athletes will be wearing at the opening ceremonies this year. Famed American designer Ralph Lauren won the clothing apparel contract throughout 2020 games. However, for the games this year, the uniforms designed by Ralph Lauren were actually made in China rather than in the U.S. Recently is was announced that for future games the uniforms will be made in the U.S.
I guess we may all understand what all the fuss is about. These are American athletes. Shouldn’t they be wearing clothing made in their country? But it seems a little naive to make the demand that our athletes should only wear uniforms and clothing made in America when in fact, MOST ALL clothing is at least, in some part, imported from other countries.
Why should only the opening ceremony uniforms be made in the U.S.? What about the thousands of other items the athletes wear like lapel pins, swimsuits, gymnastic leotards, equestrian clothing, canoes, tennis racquets, clothing belts, hat, sailboats, sneakers….the list can go on and on and on. Why is the controversy only regarding the pants, shirts, jackets, skirts and hats worn in the opening ceremony? Where do we draw the line?
